Children with Special Educational Needs

Arrangements are made for children who experience particular learning difficulties to be given work appropriate to their particular needs and abilities. This may take place in class or small groups or in a one to one situation.

The Special Needs Co-ordinator meets regularly with teachers and parents and monitors their progress, and if necessary would, with parents' prior permission, ask for the help of the Children and Families Service. Our support programme and arrangements are in line with the new National Code of Practice.

Inclusion

"The learning mentor and family support worker provides outstanding support for families which is helping to secure the standards of behaviour, achievement and attendance. Child protection procedures and health and safety arrangements are robust. Very effective procedures ensure pupils who arrive part way through the academic year quickly settle and integrate into school life."
Ofsted 2006

The governing body and staff are aware that Educational Opportunity and Children with Special Educational Needs fall under the umbrella term of Inclusion.

All personnel at Delapre are fully committed to the school being 'inclusive'.

The governors and staff fully accept their inclusive responsibilities toward the following groups of children;

  • Those with English as a second language.
  • Ethnic minorities (see Race Equality Policy).
  • All children with disabilities and special educational needs.
  • Children under stress such as sick children and those who act as carers.
  • Gender. The school will work hard to ensure equality of opportunity for both boys and girls.
  • All children who are gifted or talented.
  • Pupils at risk of exclusion.
  • Children who are in the care of the local education authorities.
