The Curriculum

Foundation Stage Reception/aged 4+

Children in the Reception classes are in the Foundation Stage and follow a curriculum which is based around the following Areas of Learning, which provide a framework for the Early Years' curriculum.

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development (including RE)
  • Communication, Language and Literacy
  • Mathematical Development
  • Knowledge and Understanding of the World
  • Creative Development
  • Physical Development

Activities and learning experiences are varied and often cross-curricular. Well planned play is a natural medium through which young children learn and therefore structured play and practical activities form a part of the curriculum. More formal learning takes place alongside this and is built up gradually over the year.

In the Foundation Stage we aim to:

  • Provide a warm happy atmosphere where each child feels valued.
  • Provide first hand experiences -young children learn by doing!
  • Provide a stimulating, challenging environment.
  • Encourage children to think for themselves and act independently.
  • Enable children to feel confident in themselves and their own abilities.
  • Provide clear routines to ensure the children's safety and well being.
  • Value children's play as meaningful learning.
  • Give children time, space and opportunity to develop at their own rate.
  • Work in partnership with parents so that together we can obtain the very best for every child.
